The idea of the week

The coast run is the big one: around 800 nautical miles between the Gold Coast and the Whitsundays, and we run it when a yacht is moving between her summer and winter grounds, north in May and south in October. It is a trip we have done, and the stops are the ones we use.

From the Gold Coast you work north through Moreton Island and the Tangalooma Wrecks, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa, and a full day on K'gari. Then out to the southern Great Barrier Reef at Lady Musgrave Island, two nights at Great Keppel, the Percy Isles, and into the Whitsundays from the quiet south end at Thomas Island, before Nara Inlet, Whitehaven and Hamilton Island to finish.

In October the same route runs the other way, from Airlie Beach to the Gold Coast. Distances are approximate and the captain sets each leg on the day for the weather.

Anchor in the sheltered waters of South Stradbroke Island for your first evening, surrounded by pristine natural beauty. Over the next day, enjoy long beach walks across the island's golden sands, paddleboarding in calm protected waters, and a casual beach club lunch or private chef-led beach picnic on the sand. Moreton Island & Tangalooma Wrecks

Moreton Island

Cruise to historic Moreton Island and explore the famous Tangalooma Wrecks—deliberately sunk ships now transformed into coral-covered artificial reefs teeming with marine life. Snorkel multiple wrecks brimming with colourful fish, sea turtles, and vibrant coral, then explore the island's dramatic sand dunes and pristine beaches. Finish with a spectacular beach barbecue under the stars, featuring fresh grilled seafood and premium wines. At sunset, the wild bottlenose dolphins that live off Tangalooma come in to the shore.

K'gari (Fraser Island) Discovery

K'gari (Fraser Island)

Anchor off Kingfisher Bay on K'gari's sheltered western shore, in time for sunset over the Great Sandy Strait. K'gari, formerly Fraser Island, is World Heritage-listed and the largest sand island on earth. Take a private guided 4WD day to Lake McKenzie's freshwater lagoon, the rainforest at Central Station, Eli Creek and the Maheno shipwreck on 75 Mile Beach, or stay on the water and explore the mangroves and sand banks of the Great Sandy Strait by tender, looking for dugong and dolphins.

Lady Musgrave Island

~78 nm · 6.5 h

Out to the southern Great Barrier Reef and Lady Musgrave Island, a 14-hectare coral cay sitting in its own 1,192 hectares of reef and lagoon, with some of the clearest water on the Reef. The yacht anchors off the reef edge and the tender takes you into the lagoon to snorkel. It is the second southernmost island in the Great Barrier Reef chain, and it is named after the wife of Sir Anthony Musgrave, a colonial governor of Queensland.

  • The southern end of the Great Barrier Reef
7-8

Great Keppel Island & Relaxation

Great Keppel Island · ~103 nm · 9 h

Anchor at Great Keppel Island, on the Capricorn Coast, for two nights of doing very little. It has seventeen white beaches, clear water and the best snorkelling at Monkey Beach. Another day, take the tender out to the outer Keppel islands, Humpy, Halfway or North Keppel, for reef snorkelling, paddleboarding and a beach to yourselves. Between them come beach lunches, spa treatments and sunsets on deck, and time to recharge before the final leg to the Whitsundays. If you want a walk, the island's rugged hinterland is worth the hike.

  • Seventeen beaches, and Monkey Beach snorkelling
  • The outer Keppel islands by tender
  • Two nights to recharge before the Whitsundays
9

The Percy Isles

Middle Percy Island · ~111 nm · 9 h

A long run north to the Percy Isles, a favourite of yachties, trawler skippers and fishermen, and a natural stop on the north-south run up the coast. Good fishing, great anchorages and charm, plenty of it. Go ashore at West Bay to the Percy Hilton, the A-frame hut hung with decades of mementos left by passing yachts, and leave your own.

  • The Percy Hilton at West Bay
  • Good fishing and quiet anchorages
  • A stop every yachtie on the coast knows
10

St Bees and Thomas Island

Thomas Island, Cumberland Islands · ~104 nm · 9 h

Into the Whitsundays from the south, through the Cumberland Islands. Pass St Bees Island, 34 kilometres north-east of Mackay inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and anchor at Thomas Island, which feels like the remote centre of the Whitsundays and gives you more solitude than the busier central anchorages. Sea Eagle Beach and Naked Lady Beach are straight out of South Pacific, with rainforest down to the sand.

  • The Cumberland Islands from the south
  • Sea Eagle Beach and Naked Lady Beach
  • Solitude before the busier islands
11

Nara Inlet & Aboriginal Heritage

Nara Inlet, Hook Island

Carry on north to Nara Inlet on Hook Island and anchor in its calm, protected water and discovering Ancient Aboriginal cave paintings dating back thousands of years.
